Caring for Your Artificial Grass

Artificial turf is used for playgrounds, putting greens, lawns, rooftops, and more. It provides a stable low-maintenance surface to play, walk, and entertain on. Caring for your artificial grass involves cleaning it, maintaining it, and avoiding damaging it. Goat Turf offers advice on how to best care for your turf installation. Here are some tips to follow:

Cleaning the Artificial Grass

Artificial turf gets covered in leaves, debris, and dirt over time due to rain, wind, and regular use. Cleaning the turf involves collecting leaves, rinsing away dirt, and removing weeds. Use a plastic rake to gather leaves together and throw them out. Using a metal rake may cause damage to the turf. The leaves should be dry, as wet leaves are harder to gather together. If you have a large space, use a leaf blower to finish the job quicker. If you have pets, also remove their waste. Removing leaves and debris regularly will help you avoid damaging or staining your turf.

Sweep Deep-Set Debris

Using either a stiff-bristled push broom or a power broom, sweep against the grain of the turf. This will remove any deep-set debris. This cleaning step should be done if it has been a while since you last cleaned your turf. A power broom finishes the work quickly and is useful for large spaces. A push broom is sufficient in small areas like decks or rooftops.

Remove Weeds

Weeds may occasionally grow through the synthetic grass. Remove the weeds using a natural weed killer and avoid ones with harsh chemicals. Don’t pull the weeds up by hand to prevent damaging the turf blades.

Rinse Away Dirt

Use a hose to wash away dirt buildup. If you actively use your turf often, rinsing it off every other day will help keep it clean. In summer heat, watering the turf can help keep it cool.

Maintaining the Artificial Grass

Doing occasional maintenance on your turf helps keep it in good condition. Goat Turf can also help maintain and repair your turf if it becomes damaged. Avoid staining and using harsh chemicals. Turf can get stained from spills, oils and liquids from vehicles, and animal droppings. Soak up stains from spilled drinks as soon as possible with paper towels, then spray the area with water and a mild detergent combination. Rinse the area using a water hose to remove the stain.

Resecure Loose Sections

While Goat Turf works diligently to secure the turf to its base during installation, over time, the turf can loosen. Our crew can resecure these loose sections with new staples and screws. We can also retape and glue areas where the seams are loose.

Remove Snow and Ice

You should remove heavy snowfalls from your turf to keep it dry and safe to walk on. You can use a plastic shovel to remove some of the snow, but be careful not to go against the grain to avoid damaging the turf blades. If only a small amount of snow has fallen, you can let it melt, and the turf’s natural drainage properties will help it dry quickly.
